Waverly Surgery Center
Charlotte, North Carolina
Healthcare
A hospitality-inspired outpatient surgery center designed to elevate recovery experience, support operational performance, and create a new revenue stream for a growing practice.
Waverly Surgery Center is a newly developed, independently branded outpatient surgery center created as a strategic expansion of a growing aesthetic and surgical practice in the Charlotte market.
The vision for this project was to create a refined, hospitality-driven surgical environment that could serve the founder’s own plastic surgery practice—while also functioning as a flexible, revenue-generating facility rentable to other surgeons in the region.
Irwin Raymond was engaged to lead the interior architecture, interior design, and environmental branding in order to establish a premium, experience-driven surgery center brand that supports patient comfort, clinical performance, and long-term business growth.
The Challenge
The primary challenge of this project was delivering a premium, hospitality-inspired surgical environment while remaining tightly aligned with a fixed and carefully controlled budget.
At the same time, the new surgery center needed to:
feel clearly distinct and independently branded from the associated medical practice
attract outside surgeons and medical partners as a rentable facility
support a wide range of procedures and clinical users
elevate the patient experience—especially for post-procedure recovery
reinforce trust, professionalism, and quality of care from first impression
The space had to perform operationally as a surgery center—while feeling emotionally supportive and reassuring for patients and families.
Our Strategy
We approached the project through our experience-driven healthcare and hospitality framework—aligning brand identity, emotional comfort, and operational efficiency from the earliest planning and design phases.
Our strategy focused on:
creating a standalone brand identity for the surgery center that could attract outside providers
prioritizing patient comfort and dignity throughout arrival, pre-op, and recovery
investing design impact where it mattered most to patient perception and experience
delivering a refined, hospitality-inspired environment while carefully managing budget and scope
Every design decision was evaluated against both experience value and financial responsibility.
The Design Solution
The final environment was designed to feel calm, welcoming, and intentionally different from a traditional surgical facility.
Soft lighting, warm materials, and carefully scaled spaces create an atmosphere that supports emotional comfort and confidence before and after procedures. Circulation and support spaces were planned to accommodate multiple surgeons and care teams, allowing the center to function seamlessly as a shared clinical resource.
Particular attention was given to the overnight recovery rooms—creating spaces that feel more like private hospitality suites than medical rooms, while still fully supporting clinical needs.
The result is a surgery center that balances clinical rigor with a deeply human recovery experience.
The Result
A fully independent, hospitality-driven outpatient surgery center brand.
A new revenue-generating facility that can be utilized by the founding practice and rented to other surgeons
A refined patient experience that elevates trust and perception of care
Consistently positive patient feedback—especially for the overnight recovery rooms
Patients frequently share that the recovery spaces feel calm, private, and far more comfortable than expected for a surgical environment.
