Cheflavor
Temecula, California
Retail & Hospitality
A gourmet retail concept designed to celebrate local makers through a refined, chef-inspired environment.
Located in Temecula, California, Cheflavor was envisioned as a specialty gourmet shop featuring ingredients sourced from local growers, breweries, and wineries.
Irwin Raymond was engaged to design a retail environment that reflects the craftsmanship of its regional partners—creating a space that feels authentic, curated, and rooted in culinary culture. The objective was to establish a destination that appeals to food enthusiasts while honoring the historic character of its setting.
The store needed to balance storytelling, merchandising performance, and architectural integrity.
The space was designed to celebrate culinary craftsmanship—positioning Cheflavor as both a specialty retailer and a cultural hub for chefs, food lovers, and the local community.
The Challenge
The success of this project required integrating contrasting design influences within a historically protected structure.
Key challenges included:
Combining historic architectural charm with the edge and energy of restaurant kitchen culture
Designing within a small footprint
Navigating historic building restrictions and preservation requirements
Maintaining operational clarity within a compact retail layout
Ensuring the environment felt authentic rather than thematic
The store needed to feel rooted in place—while expressing a contemporary culinary identity.
Our Strategy
We approached the project through a context-driven retail framework—aligning spatial planning, material selection, and brand narrative from the outset.
Our strategy focused on:
Preserving key historical architectural elements while introducing refined industrial detailing
Designing custom fixtures and millwork that reference professional kitchen environments
Optimizing space planning to support both product density and circulation clarity
Layering materials that reflect craftsmanship and authenticity
Coordinating vendors and project execution to protect design intent within regulatory constraints
Every decision reinforced the concept of Cheflavor as a destination for serious culinary enthusiasts.
The Design Solution
The final environment merges historic character with the disciplined aesthetic of a working kitchen.
Custom millwork and fixture systems provide functional display while referencing chef-grade craftsmanship. The material palette balances warmth and edge—allowing locally sourced products to stand forward within a clean architectural backdrop.
The result is a retail experience that feels intentional, grounded, and confident—an environment that would make even a master chef feel at home.
The Result
A distinctive gourmet retail identity rooted in local sourcing
Cheflavor achieved:
A balanced integration of historic preservation and contemporary design
Strong experiential differentiation within the Temecula market
National recognition as an award-winning retail concept
The project was honored as part of the Retail Design Institute’s Class of 2016, reflecting its strength as both a design concept and a commercial environment.
